First making a demo for the song, I wanted to make a Slint-like odd meter song. I just laid down some basic drum, guitar, and bass patterns. I started recording foleys out of my gut feelings. I wanted to add more texture to my music. Recording the foleys, I was inspired by the film “Enter the Void” by Gasper Noé. I tried to replicate the striking visuals and the absurd, brutal narrative of the film. Especially the toilet scene in the film, which was a trauma-inducing shock to me. I’ve recorded pretty much all the sounds in my apartment. From the squeaky door to flushing the toilet, typing on my laptop to screaming on a pillow, zipping sounds from my jacket.
The sonic choice I was contemplating until the end of the producing stage was the texture of the drums. The drums at first were very clear and hi-fi, however, it just felt somewhat off from what I wanted to express with this song. I started to listen to older records from the 50s where the recording technology was still in its infancy. I came across some early 50’s Charlie Parker records. They were very noisy, they were like half music, half noise. From those lo-fi recordings, I was inspired to put the drums into making the drums dirtier with tape distortion emulation, achieving the tape-clipping sound.
