I usually name my songs after they are finished, however, for this particular song I started the composition after I had thought of the title of the song “Behind The Wall (Ocean)”. The title kind of gives this feeling of illusion and deception. It is hard to describe in words but somewhat like the film “Truman Show”.
There are a total three sonic sections in this composition. In the composing stage of the first section, was inspired by Steve Reich’s repetitive harmonies between instruments in the “Music for 18 Musicians” and Louis Cole’s bass and drum grooves. Recording the second section, I thought of many modern industrial or post-punk bands like Model/Actriz and Shame. I also thought of traditional Balkan traditional music and Klezmer, as I wanted to give this feeling of anxiety in this straight, almost barbaric pattern. After the breakdown of the second section, I moved on to the impressionist piano (Debussy, Ravel ish) inspired section where you finally have this feeling of realizing that there is a vast ocean behind the wall.
